How to boost your energy levels !
It’s three o’clock in the morning and you are sipping yet another drink at the bar of your favourite club. The night has been quite demanding and as two pretty girls walk by and give you the eye, you just feel that you’re running out of energy, you think that you don’t have the strength to walk up to them and you can sense your entire body being drawn to the nearest stool. Whoever never felt that way owes me the next round of vitamins. Energy is the most fundamental element of our social interactions.
I often get asked what the best ways are to increase, or better manage one’s energy and I invariably answer: “Which energy do you mean?” Indeed, it is a common answer and easy way out to merely consider energy in its generic and global form. We tend to say we feel ‘sharp’ or ‘energetic’ and one may suggest that you work on raising your energy levels without giving more specific tips. So where do we draw our energy from? How do we make use of it and express it? Personally I will not recommend that you work on you energy but rather energies!
The three batteries : central elements of the holistic approach
As pointed out earlier, your energy is not produced through one single channel but through three distinct yet interdependent energetic batteries. The holistic approach distinguishes between the three following elements:
- A mental battery: the Head
- An emotional battery : the Heart
- A physical battery : the Body
Your energetic system will dig into these three resources to define your balance. This balance is not static and can fail at times. A better harmonization of your batteries and increased awareness of your levels of energy will constitute powerful and effective tools that will consequently enable you to gain a deeper knowledge of yourself and of your personality.
Let’s get back to our late night at the bar. Which battery, or more appropriately: batteries, come into play at that point? The physical battery is easy to identify but what about the emotional and mental batteries? Ask yourself a simple question: do you have the ‘feeling’ or the ‘idea’ that you are tired? If your answer goes something like: “I feel that…” then we are talking about your emotional battery. If on the contrary, you are asking yourself : “What am I thinking about?” then the focus is on your mental battery. But let’s bring our focus back to these two pretty girls and ensure that energetic deficit does not compromise a great opportunity to spend some quality time with them.
We only have as much energy as our lower battery
Hence even if you are physically in full shape and ready to analyze and discuss any topic, a low emotional battery can compromise the whole system. Similarly, a low physical energy or mental fatigue will impact your overall level of energy.
Don’t minimize the outputs, maximize the inputs !
Indeed, minimizing your energy spending will prove counter-productive, maximize the input of energy instead and build up a momentum for development. Find ways to reload your batteries: for instance, Blusher during his workshops will make you play a game of imaginary Frisbee in a public place. Not only will it warm you up physically but it will cheer you up and smash your social anxiety, hence reloading your emotional battery. A smile or any other form of positive attention will have a similar effect and will let you stack up some emotional energy. I suggest that you analyze these energetic channels to better identify everyday events that consume energy and those which generate it. Feel free to use humour as a way to support your emotional battery after it has just been shaken up by a girl who ignored you. Dance if you are running out of witty things to say. Remember that your batteries work in close interdependence and that each new source will have an effect on your overall level of energy!
The study of what American psychiatrist Eric Berne called « the strokes » is a very valuable way to identify the sources of energy and better understand with ego-state will be more favourable in a specific situation. For more insight on this, refer to Blusher’s article titled : “Approaching women, your inner child knows best.” Knowing when and how to reload your batteries will open the way to significant performance improvement and overall personal development. So get your energies up and don’t forget your Frisbee!
